Title: Mandie and the Jumping Juniper
Author: Lois Gladys Leppard
Series: Mandie, 18
Format: ebook, bind-up
Length: N/A
Rating: 3 stars

Synopsis: When Mandie and Celia left the United States to spend the summer traveling with Mrs. Taft through Europe, they didn't expect that each new place they visited would have a mystery and adventure all its own. But since boarding the Queen Victoria, it's been one episode after another.
Traveling from Switzerland to Germany with Jonathan, Uncle Ned, and Senator Morton, they arrive at the medieval stone castle of Baroness Geissler. None of them know much about the castle, but with its many turrets, long narrow slits for windows, a drawbridge and moat, it's not a surprise when they discover there's a mystery surrounding it. A very old juniper tree that's located on the property is said to "jump" sometimes, and no one knows why.
What is the secret of the jumping tree? And why is the baroness's grandson so rude and unlikeable?
Will Snowball help them solve the mystery?

Favourite character: Jonathan
Least favourite character: Mandie

Mini-review: Reading this book I realized how incredibly racist this series is. That's a rant for another time (probably once I finish the series and can jot down some examples). As I'm sure you can tell, I wasn't impressed with this book. It felt more scandalous than past Mandie books. Glad Jonathan seems to be able to talk some sense into Mandie. But they probably should've reported Rupert.

Title: While My Pretty One Knits

Author: Anne Canadeo
Series: Black Sheep Knitting Mysteries, 1
Format: ebook, bind-up
Length: N/A
Rating: 3 stars

Synopsis: The Black Sheep Knitters -- Maggie, Lucy, Dana, Suzanne, and Phoebe -- meet once a week without fail, sharing the varied and colorful skeins of their lives as much as knitting tips, recipes, and small-town gossip, and creating an intricate, durable pattern of friendship. Now a shocking murder has peaceful Plum Harbor, Massachusetts, in knots -- and the Black Sheep women must herd together to protect one of their own from a scandalous frame-up.

Maggie Messina, beloved owner of the Black Sheep Knitting Shop, is thrilled to be hosting a workshop for one of her former students, now a celebrity in the knitting world. But the celebration is upstaged when Amanda Goran, the owner of the rival Knitting Nest, is found dead in her shop on the other side of town.

Maggie had reasons to dislike Amanda, a thorn in her side ever since Maggie's shop surpassed Amanda's in popularity. Then again, it wasn't hard to dislike Amanda -- the contentious woman, whose marriage was on the rocks, seemed to specialize in causing misery all over town. But the pointed evidence has a detective casting a suspicious eye on Maggie. She may be a whiz at knitting, but can she keep the police from needling her before her shop, her reputation, and her circle of friends become unraveled?

Favourite character: Tink & Phoebe
Least favourite character: N/A

Mini-review: This felt a bit forgettable. And the reason I say that is because I just finished the book and I have nothing to say except for the fact that I solved the mystery extremely early on.

I liked Tink.

Movie Review: Dunkirk

Title: Dunkirk

Release Date: July 21, 2017

Starring: Fionn Whitehead, Mark Rylance, Barry Keoghan, Kenneth Branagh

Length: 1h 46min

Rating: PG-13

Favourite character: Tommy & George

Crush: Peter & Alex

Least favourite character: the Nazis

Mini-review: This movie is so hard to watch because it's good yet horrible. Like this actually happened. These soldiers were stranded on a beach and civilian boats and ships had to come rescue them. It's a fantastic movie. The only thing I struggled with was Harry Styles. As the movie went on, I got lost in the war and his character but at first it was really hard to differentiate him from One Direction. To me he felt too recognizable. That's not to say he wasn't good, in fact he was amazing. A far cry from his guest spot on iCarly.

It was interesting to see, because outside of Foyle's War I hadn't seen much about Dunkirk so I actually learned something during it.

Reading progress update: I've read 50%.

Could the rumors and tales surrounding the chalet possibly be true? What about the singing that is heard late at night, but in unintelligible words?

A fine setting for Mandie and her friends to work on another mystery!

Mini-review: This was alright. Mandie and the gang are at a chalet in Switzerland where they hear mysterious singing at night. So Mandie and her friends go behind her Grandmother's back (big surprise) to solve the mystery. Not to mention Uncle Ned, who for some reason knows people in Europe.

Least favourite character: Heather

Mini-review: The continuity! I now know why this series and it's spin-off have altogether 134 books. Because whoever writes this series doesn't edit. A grand opening was happening tomorrow, two pages later it's opening today (only five fictional minutes had passed). Or another one was a character talks to her in her office, leaves, then another character comes in and then she asks current person if the previous person has come to work today. Stuff like that.

It wasn't the greatest, but I'm still intrigued.

Synopsis: Nikki Maxwell has been doing everything she can to keep everyone at school from learning the truth--that she's there on scholarship in exchange for her Dad working as the school's exterminator. The last thing Nikki needs is having her friends and--worst case scenario--her crush, Brandon, associating her with the humongous roach on top of her Dad's van! Now it looks like her secret could be about to come out, and Nikki's willing to go to any zany and wacky length to prevent that from happening. The timing seems perfect when a major talent competition is announced with a school scholarship offered as the top prize. Nikki loves to sing and dance and now she gets to have tons of fun with her friends while competing for a chance to free her Dad from his obligation! (And free herself from all that potential damage to her reputation . . .) Once again, hijinks and misunderstandings aplenty ensue, as well as more hilarious and heartwarming moments with Nikki and her friends.

Favourite character: Nikki
Least favourite character: MacKenzie

Mini-review: I love these books. They are so ridiculous yet real and all of the mid to late 2000s pop culture references like the Jonas Brothers and Justin Timberlake. I loved this series growing up but I never read very far into it (only to book four and half of book five). I can't wait to finish this series.

Title: Mandie and the Silent Catacombs
Author: Lois Gladys Leppard

Format: ebook, bind-up
Length: N/A
Rating: 3 stars

Synopsis: Mandie, Celia, Mrs. Taft, Senator Morton and Jonathan leave the problems of Paris behind them as they board an express train whose destination is Rome, Italy. Mandie and Celia are excited about seeing the Colosseum, the Sistine Chapel, the Forum, the Pantheon, and the hundreds of fountains in Italy. They've nearly forgotten the vanishing woman who has followed them wherever they've gone. Without warning she reappears!
Mandie determines she'll find out who the woman is of it's the last thing she does in Europe. But the fact remains that the woman may be dangerous. And when their sightseeing time in the Catacombs turns into a near nightmare with an accompanying burglary, their time in Rome promises more surprises than even Mandie can handle!
The Catacombs are no place for Mandie and her friends on their own!

Favourite character: Jonathan
Least favourite character: Mandie & Celia

Mini-review: It's a rare (really rare) that Celia falls under the least favourite category, but this time around she really got on my nerves, with her Mandie hero-worship. Honestly, she's starting to remind me of Enid from Sweet Valley High.

The plot was okay, but there weren't enough language barriers to make it believable, seeing as they were always able to get their point across.

Movie Review: Tall Girl

Title: Tall Girl

Release Date: September 13, 2019

Starring: Ava Michelle, Griffin Gluck, Sabrina Carpenter, Paris Berelc

Length: 1h 41min

Rating: PG-13

Favourite character: Dunkleman

Least favourite character: Stig

Mini-review: So this screams stereotypical teen movie. Which isn't terrible, it's just that it's sooooo cheesy. Like ridiculously cheesy. Okay, it was kind of adorable. The whole movie is about accepting yourself for who you are. We follow Jodi, who is 6'1 and trying to get through high school until we throw Stig into the mix. Stig, the super hot (not really), super tall foreign exchange student. We also follow Dunkleman, who is Jodi's best friend, and also has been in love with her for years, but because she has a rule that she doesn't date guys shorter than her, he's always put down in a sense.

I liked it. Some parts could've been done better, other parts were awkwardly acted so you couldn't tell if something was genuine or not. But other than that, it was cute. (I also really liked the ending.)
Also, Sabrina Carpenter and Angela Kinsey are queens.

Before I Wake - Dee Henderson

Title: Before I Wake

Series: N/A
Format: hardcover
Length: 381 pages
Rating: 2 stars

Synopsis: The sheriff of Justice, Illinois, is hunting a killer. Women visiting town are being murdered, tourists in nice hotels, money still in their billfolds, jewelry still on the dresser. Quiet kills--they go to sleep and never awaken. The sheriff is not pleased to find the new detective in town, Rae Gabriella, working the case on behalf of one of the families. She's staying in the same hotel as one of the victims--and her looks suggest she could be the next victim.

Favourite character: Sillman
Least favourite character: N/A

Mini-review: What even was this? You don't find out the murder or who she chooses from the love triangle. Like honestly, this whole book is her flirting with these two guys and I remember thinking that if this were a secular fiction book, it would end up in some weird polyamorous relationship or something. Also Rae acts sometimes like she's a whiny teenager while Nathan and Bruce act like their in their 40s so it also has a slight Lolita feel. I gave this two stars strictly because I'm kind of obsessed with cops going through files and clues and notebooks over takeout and there was a lot of that in this book.

Rating: 3 stars

Synopsis: Mandie, Celia, Mrs. Taft and Senator Morton arrive safely in London and take Jonathan, the young stowaway from Mandie and the Shipboard Mystery, along with them.
A telegram from an unknown source is waiting for Mandie and an unexplained message has been left at their hotel. Who is so interested in what Mandie is doing? And why don't they sign their names? Is this a new adventure-or danger?
When they decide to deliver Jonathan to his aunt in Paris, adventure begins. But what at first seemed like a simple mystery turns into a dangerous trap and an encounter with the disappearing stranger.
Mandie's in Paris and so are the spies!

Favourite character: Jonathan
Least favourite character: Mandie

Mini-review: I did not like this. It almost felt like the author didn't write it. There were mistakes and borderline racist stereotypes (Mandie can track because of her Cherokee blood, when in reality it's a taught skill not a natural born gift). Jonathan, who can speak French and went to boarding school in England, can't tell if three girls are English speakers or French speakers based on their accents. Also it's very unrealistic that two thirteen year old girls would foil the plot of spies. Also Uncle Ned shows up in France.

Without a Trace (Nancy Drew (All New) Girl Detective Book 1) - Carolyn Keene

Title: Without A Trace
Author: Carolyn Keene
Series: Nancy Drew: Girl Detective, 1
Format: ebook
Length: N/A
Rating: 3 stars

Synopsis: Hi, I'm Nancy Drew, and I've got a case to crack. Actually make that two cases. First a gorgeous Fabergé egg has been stolen. Who would have the heart to snatch such a precious family heirloom from someone new to town? Some housewarming that is!
And if this isn't enough to keep me busy, someone's running through gardens and stomping on all the zucchinis. Needless to say, it's a big mess -- in more ways than one. Especially for Mr. Safer, who is suspected of squishing the squash. I'm pretty sure Mr. Safer's innocent. But who's the real vegetable vandal?

Mini-review: This is a set up book for a new series. It's two barely there mysteries just so we can meet the new residents of River Heights (Harold Safe is my favourite). The secondary mystery belongs in one of the children's series (Notebooks or Clue Crew) not a middle grade. It's a zucchini smasher.

Favourite character: Nighthawk & Blur
Least favourite character: Warrior Woman

Mini-review: It was really fun to read this. Except for Thundra, who I only know from the Ultimate Spider-Man show, I knew literally no one else (except for the obvious of Cap, Deadpool, Rogue and Johnny Storm). But of the main characters, no one. If you had asked me if Nighthawk was Marvel or DC, I would've said DC. I'm so glad he's Marvel. I enjoyed this.
